The year has ticked by and been filled with lots of activity so my little blog has suffered, once school starts I am back full time and spare time is precious. So I will give you a flavour of what this year has contained so far since Easter break. On the May Bank Holiday weekend the Guides and Scouts went off for their usual camp accompanied by the Rangers, Explorers and Network.

We had a beautifully dryish weekend and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, which was a huge improvement on last years weather.

On Monday we visited RHS Wisley (RHS = Royal Horticultural Society) The RHS is the organisation who also puts on the Chelsea Flower Show as well as several other shows through the year.
Spring has been much colder this year which has held the growing season back. Wisley has lots of colour if you know where to look for it.
We had an amazing day, Em needed some photographic material for her art project which she collected - 345 photos! and I thought I took a lot of pictures. Wisley is a beautiful garden and one which I have know for many years. Orchids are one of my favourite plants so this was a perfect visit.

The birds are singing and the sun is shining, if you can find shelter away from the wind the sun has warmth to it. Over the Easter weekend we visited my family in Dorset and on Saturday went down to Durlston Country Park near Swannage.
There is an Earth timeline walk charting the earths formation and change from molten ball of lava through to the beautiful place it is today. Along the path there were big stones nearly six foot tall with fossils in them and this was the most stunning (top right). We visited the castle which housed a cafe restaurant - booking before you go for a meal is essential as it is quite small. If you want morning coffee or afternoon tea you can sit on the balcony if its not too cold. The views from the top of the castle were beautiful, this is looking towards Swannage and Poole (top left)
Below the castle there is a stone planet, which was carved in 1890 by George Burt, stone mason and former owner of the castle. The stone earth records the world which has seen many changes since in names and borders. From the position of the globe you can look up to see the turrets of the castle.
As we had not been able to have lunch at the castle we moved on to Swannage for the remainder of our day. Passing the Swannage steam railway and just in time to see the arrival of the steam engine pulling a train packed with families on Easter break travelling down from Corfe Castle or Norden Station where there is a big carpark. The engine seen shunting back to the end of the station line is BR Standard class 4 80104 the picture below shows the same engine just coming into the station approach.
We spent it wrapped up cosy at home, I was busy knitting, Em was doing art work and Tony was working from home. Late morning the sun came out and melted all the snow.

Wednesday was back to normal but we had an activity day at school, this meant that some students were out on trips to Brighton, Goodwood Sculpture Park, Arundel, London - Love Through the Ages Poetry conference, Lion King and Solihul to visit Landrover. Others were taking part in school based activities: Business enterprize day, Disability Awareness and coursework catch-up for the year 11's.

Friday was comic relief dress up in the 1980's - Most of the staff were in costume and students came in 1980's costume or home clothes.
Knitting completed this week for Easter decorations are two sheep from Jean Greenhowe's Christmas Special booklet. Having made the cream one I had to try something different, so mimicking the sheep of the South Downs I made one with black face and legs, then for a change used some oddments of King Cole Splash so sheep looks as though she has been touched by the rainbow.

Finally tomorrow would have been my Grans birthday, she died in 1991 but I still think of her often, she taught me how to knit, she spent many hours knitting beautiful cardigans for me to wear to school and at home. She was a very skilled knitter and could knit a pair of sock for my father quite quickly. She once showed me how to unravel an old hand knit sweater to gently steam the curly wool straight again for knitting, how to lengthen the sleeves on a jumper, to knit an outfit for my doll as part of my primary school needlework classes. She stopped knitting when her eyesight began to fail due to the muscle in her eye not working properly. I also love, crochet and sewing which my Mum taught me. I taught myself how to cross stitch from books borrowed from the library.

I hadn't realised it was so long since I last posted but I have been busy knitting.

Earlier in the year I knitted a rainbow cosy for my little teapot I use at work. Everyone admires when they see it on my desk and it makes me smile because it is so bright and cheery.

At the end of the summer holidays I finished the ripple lap blanket off that I had started a few years back. I love it because it keeps my legs and feet warm in the winter whilst watching the tv. I made it using the ripple pattern from the crochet stitches book I have and the yarn is the DK baby wool i had left over and wanted to use up.

In November I made a cowl for Em, the first one in King Cole red aran yarn from a pattern on Ravelry

Then i crocheted a cowl in purple also for Em. This one was an adaptation of the Purl Bee pattern I started with double the starter chain and used two balls of King Cole yarn similar to Galaxy but without the sequins. It was an acrylic yarn which didn't tickle.

My final piece for this post is the beautiful Owl Sweater from a pattern by Kate Davies which can be found on Ravelry click on the word pattern above to follow the link. Em decided although she loved the eyes for the Owls that they would catch on everything including her hair as it is quite long now.

That's all for now, back soon I hope

Late mornings, lazing about the house -well mostly as Tony still has to work. Saturday was spent in Dorset visiting family, Sunday was a lazy day with a visit to the cinema in the evening to see 007's latest movie Skyfall. Outstanding film and loved every action packed minute Daniel Craig was everything one expects James Bond to be.
With the arrival of the cooler weather here my yearning to knit has returned. I finished off a lovely ripple scarf which I knitted in Regia Sock yarn. Presently I am crocheting a ripple blanket for me to use in the evenings whilst watching tv. Today we have a house full of teenagers celebrating halloween with scary movies, costumes and pizzza. Just off to warm up the pizzas. Happy Halloween Jane xJanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09997824651518446434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5264826405538672052.post-74663243603422951682012-10-06T18:23:00.002+01:002012-10-06T18:23:35.539+01:00Tempus FugitTime flies when you are having fun! Since I last posted we spent the summer holidays visiting my parents in Dorset. Then we drove to Paris to visit Tony's family, they took us on a day trip to Rouen and saw the Grand Horlorge. in paris we visited the Trocadero and its museum opposite the Eiffle Tower with our cousins.
At the end of our five day stay we brought Auntie back to England to stay with us for two weeks. We visited Brighton - The Royal Pavilion and the shops, also London to see the sights and visit Harrods, many places and villages across Sussex too.

After we had safely delivered Auntie back to the Eurostar train to return home to Paris, we flew off across to Italy. We spent a week in Florence, Italy which was wonderful. The daily temperature was between 33-36 degrees, the sun was glorious after all the weeks of rain soaked summer back home. We retreated inside each day around lunchtime/early afternoon to cool off and rest before returning to the streets in the late afternoon. We visited all the sights, ate delicious food, we browsed the many shops, took far too many photos but we had a wonderful time. Back soon Jane xJanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09997824651518446434noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5264826405538672052.post-34126171718486454232012-07-15T10:40:00.002+01:002012-07-15T10:41:18.474+01:00Oh No It Hasn't Gone Away (the rain)We seem to have become Eeyore like, in so far as we have a permanent rain cloud stuck over the UK. Many parts of theses Isles are suffering awful floods and the mess and loss that goes with it, but as usual the British sense of grit and determination to get on with it and enjoy the "summer" come what may has surfaced.
One of the girls at work is leaving at the end of this week so we went out for a day last Saturday, we stopped for lunch in the Ship Inn at Itchenor. Then we boarded a friends boat and he sailed us around Chichester Harbour. We had such fun in spite of the weather and we filled the day with lots of happy memories.
After the excitement of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee ( I watched every moment of the TV coverage) life has plodded on punctuated by rare moments of sunshine. Most of the rest of the world is intrigued by the English obsession with the weather, and our obsession at the moment is when the sun will return. We are now officially fed-up with all this rain and the flooding it brings.
My stitching mojo wandered off for a few months having been over worked last summer, but it is slowly returning. I have picked my way through a cross stitch heart for a special friend. I have finished off a little owl cushion which I started with intentions of it being a birthday present but it wasn't finished in time. Currently I am working on a cross stitch sampler for Em which we designed together for her 16th Birthday. Not long to go to the Easter Break, I just hope that the good weather holds and yet we desperately need rain. She brought her dog Cassie into school to listen to the students reading each week, her cake making skills will be much missed as well. The designs on the sampler are a mixture of Jo Verso people, bowl of carrots from the sampler girl and cupcakes from crossstitcher magazine. I designed the school logo, caravan, for sale sign, the sand castle and cassie listening to the child are my own design.

I also managed some stitching over Christmas as gifts - Britter Kitty and Britter Puppy for the christmas tree.

Now I am working on a beautiful heart cross stitch as a gift for another friend.

Today in my local supermarket I came across a new magazine called Mollie Makes it is lovely and has some delightful projects and beautiful things to read about and make.

Hopefully back soon

Jane x

Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09997824651518446434noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5264826405538672052.post-65411855394895180122011-12-28T07:32:00.003+00:002011-12-28T08:18:35.182+00:00Christmas 2011It seems only yesterday that it was the summer holidays and yet I know it wasn't. My job in September settled in to a completely new regime with longer hours and a steep learning curve. Stitching in the evenings faltered and blogging thoughts dried up (plus blogging and Mac computers aren't compatible). Finally two weeks ago I finished the last 2 of 5 samplers I have made for friends who left in the summer term. It was a big commitment and one that I hope doesn't happen again in such demand.
We have just spent Christmas with my parents in Dorset and have now returned home as Tony has to work today and tomorrow. My main Christmas present was this beautiful Rolliecord camera - it was made in 1958 and uses 120 film (medium format) which I am looking forward to using. Several friends were leaving too so I was busy stitching samplers, these are a labour of love and usually filled with either the persons achievments at school /their favourite things or a combination of both. I had five to make! and not enough time. I did succeed in making three in time for the leaving meal, I am working on the fourth sampler and I have planned out the fifth. The three samplers I have finished are: Enids, which shows her love of holidays in New York and Paris, she listens to Classic fm, loves reading books, her favourite actor is Johnny Depp (pirate Captain Jack Sparrow), she belongs to the wine club and has been a receptionist and Reprographics assistant at work.

The next was for Claire who loves the Moomins, she has a cat and dog and adores Elvis. Claire also loves shoes, so I designed a pair of killer red heels for her in stitch and finally included an outline of the roof of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. The final sampler was for Matt, who was leaving teaching for a career change. It was a peaceful spot, surrounded by a vineyard and beautiful coutryside. The mosaics have survived because they were covered by buildings erected to protect them in the early 1800's when they were first discovered. There is another Roman Villa over at Chichester which is called Fishbourne Roman Palace, Bignor is not as grand but it would have been quite a large complex. We were hoping to get out this weekend, but Tony has been plagued by his sciatic nerve all weekend. We visited the local village fair in Dorset and listened to the brass band playing whilst having tea and cakes, browsed the book stall and bric-a-brac. I found a new pin board for Em so I could have her old one for the Rangers at camp, (we put the timetable, rotas and other info up) . Our cousin from Paris is visiting in a couple of weeks time too, so we are on a spring clean mission!. Back soon, as its half term we have some fun planned this week but it is laced with revision as Em has Science, Maths and Geography Modular exams after half term, Oh the joys of being fifteen, - its not fair! The theme was the Royal Wedding. We had lots of activities, wonderful weather and great company. I found the pattern on the website of the designer Debi Birkin. It took me approximately a week to knit up in the evenings and I added a lining by knitting another layer of purple to go inside. We did visit London on Wednesday 20th to see Changing the Guards at Buckingham Palace. It was so busy that it was difficult to move in front of the palace, across the road there was a bit more space. We did struggle to see what was going on, but eventually we caught a glimpse of the Guardsmen as they left the palace Courtyard. Later in the day we ate our picnics in St James Park before going to see the Abbey (it was shut!) so we enjoyed the view and the gift shop instead. I googled 50th Birthday for ideas and found a suggestion for a box of small things, sadly I can't find the original site otherwise I'd have posted a link. I started with a list of 30 and added and fiddled with the possibilities and finally finished with 50 small things. I collected them over two months and packed them all in a shoe box which I wrapped in gold holographic paper. My friend Debbie loved her gift and especially the little box of hugs which reduced her to tears. Here is the list if you wish to make your own for a special birthday girl or boy. You can tailor the list to fit the recipient.

50 Small things for your birthday

1. for air are frightening and very wearing. It is one which we are all trying to shake off but we are exhausted. Roll on Easter holidays next Thursday. The garden is begining to fill with spring flowers and the warm sunshine is very welcome too. Back very soon. It meant that we could cook a hot meal which it turned out was necessary as we didn't find any restaurants selling chips or gluten and dairy free food suitable for Em. It gave us a chance to use the local shops, Tony spoke very rusty italian which hadn't been used since 1988 but like riding a bike he remembered most of it and gained in confidence as the days rushed by. I learned a few phrases and picked up a few more along the way, Em who usually stays silent on foreign holidays also attempted Italian and by the end of the holiday professed a love of Italy and would like to live there! I wonder how much of it was due to the idea that at the age of 16 you can learn to ride a scooter - she spotted a red vesper she'd like (oh no!) I did buy her a small model of one instead ;-) but she is keen to learn Italian, so when we return she can understand and speak more. Returning to the appartment one evening we spotted a beautiful little church up on the hillside above Sorrento all lit up. So there's no pictures to post, instead I thought I'd share my Garden with you. At the moment I can see a snowdrop at the end of the garden in one of the tubs bravely standing alone (its only a small garden) and my next door neighbours Clematis balearica is also in flower trailing across the side and top of the garage. In the corner hidden from view is the Jasmine nudiflorum also showing its pretty yellow flowers. The rest of the garden is sleeping but the birdsong from the Robin and Blackbird tell me spring is on its way. I love gardening but the extra special bit is when the Robin comes down and fearlessly picks up all the bugs from the soil that you have just turned, he's close enough to touch and then he sings from the branches of the fig tree in the centre of the garden.
Here is my garden in the summer taken from the back door as you can see its quite small but I love it, I designed and built most of it myself with help from Tony and a builder who came into do the brickwork and path.

Em has gone off on a school art class trip to the British Museum to see the Egyptian exhibits and she's very excited. I hope you have a good week. Happy Birthday Em. xxxJanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09997824651518446434noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5264826405538672052.post-53304066510221987362011-01-13T18:06:00.005+00:002011-01-13T19:42:29.786+00:00New Year, New Horizons
Its the New Year we are back at school, the budget is going to suffer huge cuts. We've been warned there's a real risk of redundancies and possibly a re-organisation. What delightful news to start the year!
So I got stuck into some knitting, a new pair of gloves in Regia red wool. Not too much knitting at a time as I don't want to upset the hand - the bruising is healing. The gloves are to replace a pair that Em bought me for Christmas but they spectacularly unravelled on our day out in London. They were only pocket-money gloves, but they went back to the shop for a refund and grumble.
I read the book Chocolate Wishes which Ali gave me for Christmas it was a lovely read - not too heavy going, I have also read the same authors book - the Twelve Days of Christmas. On the TV my favourite series at the moment is Zen although this coming Sunday is the last one! I like his style, good looks and his co-star is stunningly beautiful.

Our first week back at Rangers and we spent the time doing a couple of activities from the Girlguiding World Conference pack which is taking place later this year in June in Edinburgh, talking about rights and beliefs, then making a diversity web, which was finding out about things in common with each other with a ball of wool to pass back and forth creating a web of diversity. It was great fun with lots of laughter and giggles. Hope you have a good week. We went to Wong Kei's for lunch and had Won tun noodle soup and Beef chow ho fun with chilli and black bean sauce, all washed down with Jasmine Tea. It was amazing and I could have spent a fortune! Tomorrow is New Years Eve, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year 2011 from me and the rest of the family at Crafty conundrum. Sadly I don't have photos as my camera decided to play up! Thankfully my parents took theirs so I'm hoping for a chance to copy the photos over Christmas. Travelling back from Graduation on the following morning, I arrived at Clapham Junction Station expecting to catch a train back to Sussex having come up from Dorset on the 5.18am. After a half hours wait we were told all trains had been suspended to the south coast! five hours later I caught a train.
